The goal is to reach the lowest area on each row and column to get to the next level while preventing your opponents from reaching your goal. However, the game requires a bit of strategy and thinking in order to win.īasically, the game is very much like the classic scrabble game with two teams pitted against each other in an effort to knock each other out of a square by using special tiles that resemble ordinary playing cards.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is definitely the best version of Scribblenauts we’ve ever produced, but there are always new paths to explore. The game is so well-designed that it looks like a cross between the popular memory card solitaire game and a digital board game. Game development timeframes means there’s always something left on the cutting room floor. Where do you see the franchise going after Unlimited comes out? Where do you guys go from here? It almost sounds like in interviews ahead of the launch, you’re putting in all the things you’ve ever wanted to put in a Scribblenauts game for the first time. It’s really hard to make good content it takes lots of time and effort. It’s amazingly fun, but I think some parts of the game have accessibility issues. The art and character design are top notch. Yes, I’ve played both LittleBigPlanets on the PS3. I’m just curious… ever play that franchise before and what do you think about it? The only other game I can think of that it reminds me of is LittleBigPlanet in that the player’s imagination drives that game. It’s really hard to describe Scribblenauts to someone without showing it to them. The game allows other players to “possess” any object they see and then act as that object would to help the first player. Talk to me about how co-op will work and how players can share their creations. Scribblenauts Unlimited is the first game in the franchise to introduce multiplayer. I’m actually very happy it’s a launch title it’s a first for our studio! I wouldn’t say there is extra pressure because it’s a launch title. It’s just like a DS, the system it was originally designed for, but with much more power. With Wii U’s GamePad, Scribblenauts is a perfect fit for the console. How’s it been working on this title for the Wii U? Does it carry any extra pressure that this is a launch game? I made a tin scarecrow with the head of a lion and bright red slippers that spit out little dogs and hated monkeys of any kind. One tester made the entire cast of Star Wars with working lightsabers. People create some amazing re-imaginings of characters. What have been some of your favorite things you’ve seen people create in demos of Scribblenauts Unlimited so far? And what’s your favorite thing you’ve ever created? In the video previews, I’ve seen a ton of hysterical, insane objects like a dog on wheels. Why the decision to now tell Maxwell’s story?Ī lot of fans have asked for Maxwell’s story, so after two original titles we felt it was finally time to answer that. In Scribblenauts Unlimited, you’re saying right out of the gate, that you’re going to learn more about Maxwell, as well as why he collects Starites. You help the main character, Maxwell, collect Starites by successfully completing puzzles. Scribblenauts is a game where you solve puzzles by creating anything you can think of simply by writing it and it will come to life in the game. For those who don’t know what Scribblenauts is, how would you describe the franchise? I recently spoke via email with Jeremiah Slaczka, creative director and co-founder of 5TH Cel, the developer of the franchise, about the game and what fans should expect. The Scribblenauts franchise has invaded many mobile devices like the Nintendo DS and your iPhone, but now it’s coming to the Wii U. (Think writing the word “ladder” when you need to get to a higher location.) Your object then somehow comes to life, and if you’re smart about what you chose, helps you solve the puzzle. It’s a puzzle game where you solve puzzles by creating anything – no really… ANYTHING – you can think of simply by typing out the word. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be featuring a number of developer interviews and game previews here on the Post Game Report so you know what to expect when the system comes to stores on November 18 in an effort to help you make a decision about whether you buy a launch unit and what games you should get.įirst up, is an interview with a developer from one of the most anticipated launch titles: Scribblenauts Unlimited. Yesterday was exactly one month away from the launch of the first new game console in years: the Nintendo Wii U.
